The narrative surrounding carbon capture technology has largely focused on its technical performance: can it effectively remove CO2 from flue gas, can the captured gas be compressed and transported, and will underground storage remain secure? These are important questions, but they are no longer the decisive factors explaining why most announced carbon capture projects stall before construction. The critical missing component appears to be commercialization. Even when a cement plant successfully captures carbon, it may still incur losses on every tonne of CO2 sequestered. Similarly, a technically ready storage site can remain empty if there are no contracted volumes of CO2 to inject. The infrastructure for transport, such as pipelines, also faces similar commercialization challenges. Without a clear path to profitability or a strong economic incentive, the deployment of carbon capture technology is severely hampered. This shift in focus from technical to commercial challenges has significant implications for investors, project developers, and policymakers. It suggests that current policy frameworks or market mechanisms may not be sufficient to drive the widespread adoption of carbon capture. The industry needs to find ways to make carbon capture economically attractive, perhaps through carbon pricing, tax credits, or innovative business models that create value from captured CO2. The lack of commercial appeal is a key bottleneck that needs to be addressed for carbon capture to play a meaningful role in decarbonization efforts. Investors and operators should watch for developments in policy and market-based solutions that could improve the economic case for these projects. The viability of future carbon capture initiatives hinges on overcoming these financial and market-related obstacles, rather than solely on technological advancements.
